09/06/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Second-year lefty Brett Anderson can pitch the Oakland Athletics a game closer to .500 and keep them an outside contender in the American League playoff race today, when the team hosts the Seattle Mariners for the first of three games at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
The Athletics come in after taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim over the weekend, though they lost by a 7-4 score on Sunday. Bobby Abreu drove in three runs and scored three times to lead the Angels.
Jeff Larish hit a two-run double for Oakland, which has dropped five of seven. A's starter Vin Mazzaro (6-8) was rocked in 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits as the right-hander lost his sixth straight decision.
The Athletics are now two games below .500 at 67-69 and sit eight games behind the Texas Rangers in the chase for AL's West Division title. The Rangers, who lost slugging outfielder Josh Hamilton to injury over the weekend, begin a four-game series today in Toronto.
Anderson, a 22-year-old from Midland, Texas, was 3-2 on the season after a 4-3 defeat of the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 4 in Oakland. He's 0-4 in five starts since, however, including a six-inning stint en route to a 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
He's pitched at least six innings in four of those five starts, allowing 34 hits and 14 runs in 28 innings.
The slump began against the Mariners on Aug. 10 in Seattle, when Anderson allowed five hits and a run in seven innings of a 2-1 loss.
He is 2-2 in six home starts in 2010.
Seattle counters with 27-year-old southpaw Jason Vargas, who'll seek his first win since Aug. 14.
The former second-round pick of the Florida Marlins defeated the Cleveland Indians to improve to a career-best 9-5 that day, but has lost three subsequent starts against the Yankees, Minnesota and the Angels.
Vargas picked up his initial win of 2010 against the Athletics after tossing six innings and allowing five hits and two runs while walking none and striking out six in Seattle on April 14.
He's 2-0 in three career games against Oakland with a 1.69 earned run average in 10 2/3 innings.
Seattle comes in off a winning effort on Sunday, when Russell Branyan homered and drove in two runs to back eight scoreless innings by Felix Hernandez as the Mariners topped Cleveland, 3-0, at Safeco Field.
Oakland has won five of six meetings with the Mariners held at the Coliseum this year, as well as seven of 12 overall matchups between the teams in 2010.

They’ll get their first test from the New Orleans Saints this Thursday night. The defending champs had nothing but good things to say about the New Orleans defense this past week, praising their opponents’ pass rush and run-stopping abilities.
"They play very aggressively," head coach Tony Dungy told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "They play a lot of man-to-man coverage, and they come after you. They have good pass rushers, and they're going to try to pressure us, I'm sure."
Both center Jeff Saturday and quarterback Peyton Manning gave New Orleans’ front four props, admitting keeping guys like Will Smithand Charles Grant contained would be a tall task for the offensive line.
New Orleans ranked second in total defense during the preseason at a sportsbook, allowing just under 233 yards per game. Last season, the defense finished 11th in the league after giving up 307.3 yards and 20.1 points per contest.
Not so sound on the ground

Brees says bring it on

Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC. The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game. For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft. Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.
1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign? New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1. Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT. Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season. With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round. LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems. If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were another NFC South team to have a disappointing 2007 season. The Falcons have been plenty busy during the off season with plenty of players coming and going including a new head coach. The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub. High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career. With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season. The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age. It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot. This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.
