Church, Maholm lift Pirates over Cubs

05/04/2010 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ryan Church's two-run homer in the sixth inning vaulted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park.

Andy LaRoche also homered for the Pirates, who opened a nine-game homestand and put the brakes on a three-game skid.

Paul Maholm (2-2) earned the win and allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings.

Home runs by Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto accounted for the offense for the Cubs, who saw their three-game win streak halted.

Cubs starter Ryan Dempster (2-2) was solid, allowing three runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings, but suffered the loss.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates trailed 2-1. Garrett Jones laced a two-out single before Church came to the plate and belted a fastball over the wall in right field.

Evan Meek replaced Maholm and tossed a scoreless seventh before Joel Hanrahan recorded a perfect eighth.

Closer Octavio Dotel yielded a one-out walk to Derrek Lee in the top of the ninth, but Marlon Byrd grounded out and Aramis Ramirez stranded the potential tying run when he fouled out to end the game.

For his efforts, Dotel earned his fourth save of the campaign.

LaRoche's solo blast in the first opened the scoring before the Cubs tied it up when Soriano's seventh homer of 2010 began the fourth inning.

Soto's two-out home run in the sixth gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead.

Game Notes

Maholm improved to 5-1 in 10 career starts against the Cubs...Soriano has now homered four times off Maholm and is 7-for-22 lifetime against the Pirates twirler...Despite the loss, Chicago has won eight of its last 10 at Pittsburgh...The Cubs stranded 12 baserunners...Both teams posted eight hits.
